The living room we started with#
A San Francisco Victorian rental with beautiful bones buried under bad rental-grade choices, tan wall-to-wall carpet, sandy beige walls, generic gray sectional, and a boarded-up fireplace no one ever loved.
The design brief#
Warm California mid-century, not the black-and-teal version. Terracotta and caramel are doing the color work. Walnut is doing the wood work. Everything else is soft cream. Rules:
- Restore the bones first. Crown molding, window trim, hardwood floors, before any furniture goes in.
- The fireplace is the anchor. Dark navy Portuguese tile makes the caramel leather sofa pop across the room.
- One organic shape per zone, the boucle wingback, the fiddle-leaf fig, the walnut coffee table's soft edges.
The palette#
- Cream walls, #F0EAD9
- Honey walnut floors + fireplace mantel, #8B5E3C
- Dark navy Portuguese fireplace tile, #1E2A44
- Caramel full-grain leather, #A56E42
- Cream shag rug with moss diamond edge, #EEE6D0 / #5D6B44
The install order#
- 1Rip up the carpet, usually there's honey oak underneath. Refinish it.
- 2Strip the crown molding and window trim, restain walnut.
- 3Paint walls cream, ceiling one shade lighter.
- 4Reface the fireplace surround in dark navy Portuguese tile + walnut mantel.
- 5Center the cream shag rug on the fireplace, not the couch, so the axis reads right.
- 6Caramel leather MCM sofa against the bay window, catching afternoon light.
- 7Cream boucle wingback + black leather-and-walnut accent chair angled toward the fireplace.
- 8Low walnut coffee table on the rug. One brass candle. One stack of books. Nothing else.
- 9Oatmeal linen roman shades on the bay window, never floor-length curtains in an MCM room.
- 10Fiddle-leaf fig in a matte-cream planter by the window.
- 11Framed SF map above the fireplace mantel.
