The bathroom we started with#
A tired 90s master bath, beige tile from floor to ceiling, a corner Jacuzzi tub nobody ever ran, a builder-grade shower stall, and a two-drawer plastic vanity. Zero surface anyone wanted to touch.
The design brief#
Modern Luxe Spa. Two design decisions did all the heavy lifting:
- Book-matched Calacatta marble, one slab, cut and mirrored across the shower wall so the veining flows like a Rorschach. This alone reads as $$$$.
- A cedar sauna cabinet, walnut-framed, warm interior glow visible through the glass. Turns the bathroom into a wellness room.
Everything else is restraint: cream floor, brass fixtures, one bubble chandelier, one folded towel stack.

The install order#
- 1Gut the room. Level the floor.
- 2Cream honed Calacatta floor tile, warm-tone grout.
- 3Frame + rough-in the cedar sauna cabinet on the far wall.
- 4Book-matched Calacatta on the shower wall and half-wall behind the tub.
- 5Fluted freestanding acrylic soaker tub, centered under the window.
- 6Brass floor-mount tub filler.
- 7Glass-walled shower, no frame, no header, brass rain head + brass hand shower.
- 8White shaker double vanity, Calacatta waterfall top, brass ring pulls.
- 9Brass-framed vanity mirror (rectangular, 40" wide) with linear brass sconces on each side.
- 10Cream geometric wool bath rug in front of the tub.
- 11Brass X-frame side table + folded white spa towels.
- 12Bubble glass chandelier hung 6" below the ceiling, over the tub, not the vanity.
The luxe details that actually matter#
- All bulbs are 2700K. Cooler = bathroom. Warmer = spa.
- The mirror sits 4" below the sconces, not level with them. Level looks builder-grade.
- No towels on the floor. Rolled and stacked on the X-frame side table.
