The bedroom we started with#
A busy rental bedroom, mismatched art on every wall, cool-toned LED bulbs, and a comforter with three competing patterns. The room felt loud even when empty.
The design brief#
Japandi, wabi-sabi minimalism with warm neutrals. Rules:
- One accent color, maximum. Ochre on a lumbar pillow. Everything else stays neutral.
- Textures, not patterns. Nubby wool, woven jute, hand-troweled plaster, rice paper.
- Warm 2700K bulbs only. Cool light kills the whole aesthetic in one flick.
The palette#
- Warm oatmeal plaster walls and ceiling, #EAE0CC
- Warm oak floor and platform bed, #C8A97E
- Cream linen bedding, #EFE5D0
- Ivory wool rug, #F0EBD8
- Ochre accent, #B58A4E
The install order#
- 1Prime walls and ceiling, apply warm oatmeal lime plaster
- 2Wide-plank warm oak floor, matte oil finish
- 3Layered rugs (large jute, smaller ivory wool on top)
- 4Low white-oak platform bed with cream linen bedding + one ochre accent pillow
- 5Small oak nightstand tucked into the corner beside the headboard
- 6Framed sumi-e ink landscape on the wall above the bed
- 7Round rice-paper pendant lantern replacing the ceiling bulb
- 8Style the nightstand: ceramic table lamp, single dried pampas stalk in a stoneware vase, one hardcover book
