Turning a cluttered entryway into a Modern Farmhouse mudroom

The entryway we started with#

A three-foot hallway with a broken coat rack, muddy shoes on the floor, and a bin for mail nobody remembered was there.

The design brief#

Modern Farmhouse mudroom. Warm, useful, and clean-lined. Rules:

• Function first. Every hook exists for a specific coat.
• One material story. Warm shiplap on the wall, oak on the bench, jute underfoot. Repeat until done.
• Nothing floats. Even the boot tray sits flush with the bench.

The install order#

   Install 6" horizontal shiplap on the accent wall, painted warm off-white

   Solid warm-oak bench with two cubbies below for shoes

   Row of six cast-iron double hooks centered above the bench

   Jute runner in front of the bench, full width

   Woven basket on the top of the bench for hats and gloves

   Small brass wall hook on the side wall for a leash or umbrella

   One framed print above the hooks (a small landscape or an alphabet), matte black frame

   A single ceramic dish on the bench for keys
