The corner we started with#
An empty bay window with dusty vertical blinds and a chipped white sill. The kind of feature every apartment listing photographs, then nobody ever uses.
The design brief#
The user brief said "cottagecore" but we've seen that go wrong, too much floral, too much country. The version that actually feels calm is 90% neutral texture with one vintage floral moment as the anchor.
Our rules:
- Textures do the emotional work, nubby linen, brushed brass, worn wool
- One pattern, the vintage floral rug. Everything else is solid
- Warm-white bulbs only, 2700K. Anything cooler kills the "rainy afternoon" feeling
The palette#
- Warm ivory walls, #F1EBDD
- Cream linen cushion, #E8DFC9
- Faded rose + moss in the rug, #B08682 and #7A8869
- Aged brass, #8C7746
The install order#
- 1Take down the blinds. Patch and touch-up the paint.
- 2Custom-cut cream linen cushion sized to the window sill (or off-the-shelf 60" bench cushion trimmed to fit).
- 3Vintage-style floral wool rug centered under the bay.
- 4Two oatmeal linen curtain panels, floor-length, on a slim brass rod extended 4-6" beyond the window frame.
- 5Brass adjustable arm sconce mounted next to the window, or a small brass table lamp on the sill.
- 6Two throw pillows in mixed-neutral linen + one small nubby ivory throw draped diagonally.
- 7A small side table (or a stack of hardcover books used as one) for a mug of tea.
