The room we started with#
A safe beige dining room, plain drum shade, a rental-grade rectangular table, four dining chairs nobody remembers buying, and a wall of empty. The kind of space where nobody lingers after dessert.
The design brief#
Warm Bohemian, but restrained. We wanted a room that reads hosted, layered, tactile, textured, without tipping into "eclectic overload." The rules we set for ourselves:
- One statement piece, the kilim rug does the color work so everything else can stay quiet.
- Two natural materials, cane and rattan repeat, so the eye reads them as intentional rather than random.
- No metallics, brass would fight the warm-earth palette. We used matte black hardware only.
The palette#
- Warm ivory plaster walls, #EDE5D6
- Terracotta + rust in the kilim, #B25F3E
- Deep olive on the leather pendant flex, #4C5238
- Natural rattan, #C09F73
The install order#
- 1Clear + patch the walls
- 2Cream plaster (or matte cream paint if you're renting)
- 3Lay the vintage kilim first, sizing the rest of the room around it
- 4Round jute + cane dining table centered on the rug
- 5Cane bentwood chairs, two solid wood at the head
- 6Pampas grass in a terracotta vessel, dead center on the table
- 7Woven rattan pendant on a slim brass chain
- 8One tall snake plant in a raw terracotta pot by the window
